Good with

  • Cats — no: “No - I’ve never lived with cats before, and due to my strong prey drive, I’m not suitable for a home with cats. I’ll need a cat free home where I can settle in and thrive.”
  • Other dogs — no: “No - I previously lived with a Jack Russell, but unfortunately, we struggled to get along and live happily together. If you’d like more information about my history with other dogs, please contact our dog assessor via the email address provided.”
  • Children — no: “Teenagers: Yes - 18+; Young children: No - I’m a very bouncy and energetic boy, so I’d be best suited to an adult only home without children. I’m also not particularly comfortable with direct eye contact, so I’d love a home where my boundaries are understood and respected.”

About Hewey

I’m an extremely lively 2 year old crossbreed Lurcher, believed to have some Collie in me due to my eye colour, although most of my heritage is Lurcher. I’m a speedy boy with a real talent for jumping, and I absolutely love leaping up at people at full speed when I’m excited! Because I can jump at least 7 feet (that’s as high as the team have seen me go so far!), I’ll need a foster or forever home with secure fencing of 7–8 feet.

I can be a little nervous in new environments, and I’m still getting used to life in rescue kennels. It’s not really my cup of tea, as I much prefer having space to run, explore and enjoy life outside! I love spending time off lead in our secure fields with my favourite humans, and I’ve already started forming lovely bonds with the animal welfare team. Once I feel comfortable with you, you’ll start to see more of my wonderful personality shine through.

I’m a big fan of toys, and when I’m out in the fields, I’ll usually choose a toy over a treat any day! If there aren’t any toys around, though, I’m more than happy to accept a tasty treat. I also have a particular love for water, especially running taps! One of my absolute favourite games is fetch. If you have a ball, I’ll happily bring it over and place it in your hand to ask you to throw it for me again. I don’t tend to do this with other toys, though, balls are definitely my favourite!

As well as being full of energy, I have a very affectionate side. I love a gentle pat or scratch and can be a really loving boy once I feel safe and comfortable with you. I’ve got so much to offer the right person, and the team think I’m an absolutely cracking dog!

My dream would be to find my forever home, but an experienced foster home would be wonderful, too. I’m finding kennel life difficult, and two walks a day just aren’t enough to meet my needs. I want to run, play, explore and enjoy life, rather than spend so much of my time in a kennel.

I’m looking for an adult-only home with experience of Collies, Lurchers or other high energy, highly strung dogs. My future human will need to understand that I may take time to settle into a new environment and that I must be allowed to come out of my shell at my own pace. Patience, consistency and an understanding of my needs will be so important in helping me flourish.

My foster carer or adopter will also need to be prepared to work closely with our Dog Advisor to help me continue developing and to make sure I get the right support.

For a foster placement, we would ideally like someone based in the Torfaen, Newport or Monmouthshire areas, so we can work closely with Gary throughout my stay.

I’m a fun loving, affectionate and energetic young lad who has so much potential! I just need someone who understands dogs like me, can give me the space and guidance I need, and is willing to help me settle into a life outside the kennels.

Could you be the person who gives me that chance? ❤️

Not everyone can offer a forever home – but you can still change Hewey’s life, and the lives of many more animals like them.

By donating to All Creatures Great and Small, you’re helping us provide food, shelter, veterinary care, and round-the-clock love to animals who’ve lost everything. Hewey’s story is just one of many – but with your support, none of them have to face it alone.

Your gift today helps us keep the kennel doors open, the blankets warm, and hope alive.

Every pound makes a difference. Every life is worth it.

Do I have any medical issues? Potentially - I’ve had a full health check with the vet, and I’m fit and healthy! I do have a previous injury to my rear left foot, where I appear to have split my paw pad in the past. Thankfully, it isn’t causing me any problems at the moment, and it may never cause me any issues in the future. I’m fully vaccinated, with my next booster due on the 22nd September 2027. I’ve also worked hard on my muzzle training. When I first arrived at ACGAS, I wasn’t muzzle trained, but I’ve made fantastic progress . I wear my muzzle before entering the vets, and I was very calm and settled during my recent visit. I travel to the vets brilliantly and was a very chilled out boy throughout my consultation. I’m not neutered at the moment, following veterinary advice.

Am I good on the lead? Potentially - I’m generally good on the lead, although I can sometimes pull quite strongly when I feel like it! I’ll need a confident, strong handler who can manage me when I get a little enthusiastic, along with some loose lead walking training to help me improve.

Do I have any fears? I can feel uncomfortable around people wearing caps and/or sunglasses, and I’m not always comfortable with direct eye contact or being towel dried. In my previous home, it was noted that I could react to loud noises and feel uneasy around visitors I hadn’t met before. Since arriving at the rescue, I’ve also shown some wariness towards certain individuals, so I’ll need a patient and understanding home that will give me time to build trust at my own pace.

What are my exercise requirements? Minimum of 2 hours, per day, on lead/off lead engagement, but I would happily have more given the opportunity!
